YEREVAN (CoinChapter.com) — U.S. President Donald Trump pardoned Ross Ulbricht, ending his 12-year imprisonment. Ulbricht, the founder of the Silk Road darknet marketplace, was serving a double life sentence plus 40 years for his role in the platform’s operations.
Trump Announces Ross Ulbricht’s Pardon
On Jan. 21, Trump revealed the decision on his Truth Social account. He said,
“I just called the mother of Ross William Ulbright to let her know that in honor of her and the Libertarian Movement, which supported me so strongly, it was my pleasure to have just signed a full and unconditional pardon of her son, Ross.”

Silk Road’s Bitcoin Transactions and Impact
The Silk Road, operational between 2011 and 2013, allowed the exchange of goods and services, including illegal drugs, through Bitcoin transactions. It generated more than $200 million during its operation and had over 100,000 users.
In 2013, the FBI dismantled the Silk Road and arrested Ulbricht. Authorities seized 69,370 Bitcoin, which are now valued at over $6 billion. The assets were sold off by the Biden administration in late 2024, shortly before Trump’s pardon announcement.
Ulbricht’s supporters argue that his sentence was disproportionately severe compared to other participants. For example, Matthew Verran Jones, one of the site’s major drug dealers, served just six years.
Cryptocurrency Advocates on Ross Ulbricht’s Release
The cryptocurrency community has long campaigned for Ross Ulbricht’s release, viewing him as a key figure in the adoption of Bitcoin. The Silk Road’s use of Bitcoin transactions introduced the digital currency to a broader audience, although for illicit purposes.
Freeing Ross Ulbricht was among President Donald Trump’s promises to the cryptocurrency community during his presidential campaign. Trump pledged to pardon the Silk Road founder on his first day in office if reelected.
However, frustration grew among Bitcoin advocates when Trump did not act on this promise immediately after taking office on Jan. 20. Instead, he pardoned approximately 1,500 individuals connected to the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol attack.

Paul highlighted the disparity in sentencing, noting that Ulbricht’s punishment was far harsher than many other Silk Road participants.

The cryptocurrency community has consistently campaigned for the release of Ross Ulbricht, citing multiple reasons for their support.
Many questioned Ulbricht’s central role in the Silk Road operations. They argued that his punishment was excessive and that he did not deserve a life sentence for facilitating a platform where users could trade goods, both legal and illegal.
Others referred to Ulbricht as a “Bitcoin legend” for his early involvement in popularizing Bitcoin.

Billionaire Tim Draper Calls for Ross Ulbricht’s Release
Tim Draper, one of the world’s most prominent investors, has voiced strong support for the release of Ross Ulbricht. During an interview on the Crypto Finder podcast, Draper passionately called for Ulbricht’s freedom, echoing sentiments he shared in a Sep. 21, 2019 tweet.
“Free Ross! Get him out. We need entrepreneurs like that guy!”
Draper said. He emphasized the importance of Ulbricht’s innovative mind, adding,
“Why do we put these really extraordinary people in jail? We need their minds, their energy, their life force.”

“I get that he’s got to be an example, and he stepped over the line, but he’s been in jail for a while. Get him out.”
Programmer Amir Taaki said,
“I owe everything to Ross Ulbricht. Crypto changed my life. Crypto became big because of him. He made the ultimate sacrifice. We all benefitted from his work,”

In a 2013 Forbes interview, Ulbricht stated,
“I didn’t start the Silk Road, my predecessor did. From what I understand, it was an original idea to combine Bitcoin and Tor to create an anonymous market. Everything was in place; he just put the pieces together.”
Advocacy from Ross Ulbricht’s Family
Lyn Ulbricht, Ross’s mother, has been a vocal advocate for her son’s release. She criticized the harsh sentence, noting that he had already served a decade in prison. Lyn said,
“He wants to solve problems and to help make the world a better place, which is a lot of why he loves Bitcoin, because it opens up prosperity for people who can’t get a bank account and people. That’s his idealism.”
